Public appointment: Member reappointed to Borders Health Board

The Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, Neil Gray MSP today announced the reappointment of James Ayling as a Member of Borders NHS Board.

Member

James Ayling initially joined the Board of NHS Borders in 2021 and is currently Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee. He is a non-practising member of the Law Society of Scotland. He has worked in a variety of organisations within the private and public sectors, dealing with legal, financial, governance, company secretarial and commercial contract matters and was a Director of a Scottish fund management company. He has in the past been a volunteer with Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland and the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh. He brings with him wide experience of analysis of complex matters and resolving difficult issues.

Reappointment

This reappointment will be for four years and will run from 5 April 2025 and end on 4 April 2029.

This reappointment is regulated by the Ethical Standards Commissioner.

Remuneration

This reappointment is part time and attracts a remuneration of £11,700 for a time commitment of 1 day per week.

James Ayling does not hold any other public appointments.

Political activity

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process.  However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity within the last five years (if there is any to be declared) to be made public.   

James Ayling has had no political activity within the last five years.

Background

NHS Borders is responsible for meeting the health needs and improving the health and wellbeing of around 118,900 people living in the Borders, spread over 4,723 square kilometres of town, village and rural communities.  NHS Borders provides a range of health and social care services which includes acute, mental health, primary and community services.
