Cross-party support for Paisley and Dundee Culture bids
Parliament debate secures consensus.
Parties across the Scottish Parliament united today to give backing to Paisley's 2021 UK City of Culture and Dundee's 2023 European Capital of Culture bids.
In a debate held in the Parliament this afternoon, MSPs voted unanimously to recognise the significant contributions that the communities of Paisley and Dundee make to Scotland’s cultural life and the local, national and international boosts that both bids would bring to the country.
Speaking after the vote, Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs Fiona Hyslop, said:
“I welcome the overwhelming support for today’s motion, confirming that there is cross-party support and a shared appreciation of Paisley and Dundee’s ambitions.
“These bids will bring undisputed cultural and economic benefits to individuals, communities and organisations all across Scotland. Both bids are exciting prospects and a good fit with the Government’s ambitions, as we recognise the significant contribution the bids will make to Scotland’s rich cultural life and the local and national boost that winning bids will bring.
“I am pleased to confirm Scottish Government support for Paisley and Dundee’s bids, and that of our national agencies: we are committed to working with the local bids teams to ensure their plans and ambitions are taken forward.”
