Education Scotland chief executive

Education Scotland Chief Executive, Dr Bill Maxwell, has announced today that he will retire in June 2017.

Dr Maxwell has led Education Scotland since its establishment in 2011, and was HM Chief Inspector of Education from 2010. He has held a number of Education Inspectorate roles both in Scotland and Wales since 1994.

Responding to this announcement, the Deputy First Minister said:

“I would like to convey my thanks and appreciation to Dr Bill Maxwell for the significant contribution he has made to the leadership and improvement of education in Scotland.

“As Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Education for Scotland, Bill has overseen our system of school inspection and has ensured a clear focus on improvement. He has been passionate about the fact that a good education unlocks potential for every child and young person and ‎his thoughtful and carefully considered advice has been greatly appreciated.

“Bill has played a key role in ensuring the successful implementation of Curriculum for Excellence, and he has worked to keep a determined focus on the educational advice that supports the Scottish Attainment Challenge.

“Bill can be very proud of the contribution that he has made to education and to public service in Scotland, and I wish him well for the future."
