Preparing Business for Brexit
New grants to help SMEs get ready for Brexit.
A new grant scheme to help exporters get ready for Brexit was announced today by Economy Secretary Keith Brown as he pledged to help business deal with the economic consequences of leaving the EU.
To help prepare business for Brexit, a package of support will be created to ensure Scotland’s successful drive to increase exports continues.
The first element of the package was announced today with a grant of up to £4,000 for exporters and potential exporters. The 100% funded grants, delivered through Scottish Development International (SDI), will be used to support eligible companies mitigate risks and capitalise on export opportunities despite the challenge Brexit will bring. Further support will be unveiled in due course.
Economy Secretary Keith Brown said:
“We want to grow the economy and, in particular, continue the successful growth in exports.
“Europe remains a vitally important trading partner for Scotland. The total amount of goods exported to our European neighbours rose by 21% in the year ending March 2018, increasing to £14.6 billion, highlighting the need to protect our trading links with Europe.
“Brexit is a clear and present danger to that export drive.
“This is evident from the work of the Scottish Fiscal Commission. Brexit will have a negative impact on Scotland’s economy, reducing growth in trade, productivity and investment.
“That is why we are taking steps now to mitigate its impact on business in Scotland.
“Working through our national agencies we will ensure eligible companies have access to a support grant of up to £4,000 per company to help mitigate risks and capitalise on export opportunities.
“Open to all, but of particular value to small and medium sized companies, this is a clear sign that the Scottish Government will stand behind Scotland’s businesses as they face the reality of Brexit.”
