Housing and homelessness

Domestic abuse is a leading cause of women’s homelessness in Scotland.

This is why we commissioned a working group, co-chaired by Scottish Women’s Aid (SWA) and the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) Scotland, to look at the actions needed to prevent homelessness for women and children experiencing domestic abuse.

The working group published the Improving housing outcomes for women and children experiencing domestic abuse (social rented sector) report in December 2020. We accepted all 27 recommendations from the report in principle.

A pilot fund to support women and children leaving an abusive relationship was announced in 2023. Women’s Aid groups disbursed £500,000 in five pilot areas. The fund ended on 31 March 2024 and an evaluation is being carried out.
