Animal slaughter: guidance on the use of mandatory CCTV

Guidance to help business operators of slaughterhouses comply with the Mandatory Use of Closed Circuit Television in Slaughterhouses (Scotland) Regulations 2020.

Data protection

Where CCTV recordings contain images or audio of identifiable people, the data controller (that is you, as the business operator) must make sure that it is processed in line with data protection requirements; you must register with the Information Commissioner’s Office.

You can get guidance on your responsibilities from the website of the Information Commissioner’s Office  where you will also find out about carrying out a data protection and impact assessment - something you may wish to do.

The General Data Protection Regulation (the “GDPR”) requirements on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data need to be observed at all times.

More guidance on data protection can be found on the Information Commissioner’s Office website along with information on good practice when operating CCTV surveillance camera devices.

Good practice advice for those operating CCTV and other surveillance camera devices that view or record individuals is also provided by the Information Commissioner’s Office website

You should inform all personnel of the CCTV systems’ installation, by communicating with them in writing or other means and putting up signs.
