Businesses in Scotland: 2024
Information on the number of businesses operating in Scotland.
Headline results
- as at March 2024, the number of private sector businesses operating in Scotland was estimated at 358,235, with the number of private sector registered businesses at 174,085
- over the latest year, the number of registered businesses increased by 715 (0.4%) – this is the first annual increase in the registered business stock since 2020
- between 2023 and 2024, there was an increase in the number of small, medium and large sized businesses, and an increase in the number of abroad-owned businesses operating in Scotland
- as at March 2024, there was an estimated 355,805 Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) operating in Scotland, providing an estimated 1.2 million jobs (55.9% of private sector employment)
