Barley – Highest winter barley yield in 20 years

Spring barley

In 2022 spring barley yield was 6.8 tonnes per hectare. Spring barley production was 1.6 million tonnes.

A 17% increase in spring barley yield from last year boosted production to above its ten-year average. Production increased by 11%, despite a 5% decrease in sown area. 

Winter barley

In 2022 winter barley yield was 8.2 tonnes per hectare. Winter barley production was 0.4 million tonnes.

Winter barley yield was the highest recorded in the past two decades, rising by 6% from last year. Combined with a 2% increase in area this resulted in a 9% increase in production.
