Cereal and oilseed rape harvest: final estimates - 2024
Final estimates of area, yield and production for winter and spring barley, wheat, oats and oilseed rape, for the 2024 harvest.
Key findings
-
Total cereal production from the 2024 harvest is around 3.0 million tonnes. This means production is at an average level compared to the last 5 years, and a 2% decrease compared to 2023.
- Wet weather particularly affected winter planting and continued into spring planting. Area used to grow winter crops decreased and the area of spring planted crops increased. Overall, the area of cereals decreased around 1% from 2023.
- Final results show decreases in total production of winter barley and wheat from 2023, to below the 5-year average. Driven by decreases in winter barley area and both wheat area and yield.
- It is an above average year for spring barley, with total production around 1.7 million tonnes.
- Total 2024 production of oats increases compared to 2023 as area and yield increased. While it is a good year for oat yield, area and production fell short of the 5-year average.
- Oilseed rape production decreases from its record high in 2023. The 2024 area of oilseed rape remains above average. But low yield drove below average production.
