Community Learning and Development (CLD) - Statistics Brief

This statistics brief presents data relevant to CLD in Scotland. While the Scottish Government does not collect or publish data on participation in, and the impact of, CLD, several sources provide information on the communities CLD is trying to reach.


Population of Scotland

  • Over one million people in Scotland are aged 65 and over.
  • This is over a quarter of a million higher than the number of people aged under 15 (832,300).
  • The number of people in older age groups (65+) increased by 22.5% since 2011.

By 2045:

  • The number of people aged 65 and over is projected to grow by nearly a third.
  • The number of children is projected to fall by nearly a fifth.
  • The population aged 16-64 is projected to fall slightly (-3%).
