Community Learning and Development (CLD) - Statistics Brief

This statistics brief presents data relevant to CLD in Scotland. While the Scottish Government does not collect or publish data on participation in, and the impact of, CLD, several sources provide information on the communities CLD is trying to reach.


Literacy and Numeracy

  • There is no up to date data on adult literacy and numeracy in Scotland.
  • The most recent survey of adult literacy in Scotland (published 2010) found that approximately 27% of the population faced occasional challenges and constrained opportunities due to their literacy skills.

Scottish Survey of Adult Literacies 2009

Among respondents to the Scottish Census 2022:

  • 0.17% (9,067 people) reported ‘No skills in English.’
  • 0.98% (51,795 people) reported ‘Limited English skills.’
  • 94.18% (nearly 5 million people) reported that they speak, read and write English.
