Community Learning and Development in Scotland and internationally: literature review - plain language summary

A plain language summary of the literature review which documents research on Community Learning and Development (CLD) delivered within Scotland and internationally. The review forms part of the evidence base collected as part of the Independent Review of CLD, led by Kate Still.

2. Summary of Findings

We found strong evidence that CLD can have a positive impact for learners. For example:

  • Increased confidence.
  • Help young people feel safer.
  • Promote safety in communities.
  • People being involved in their communities.

There is strong evidence that CLD supports people with their health and wellbeing. For example:

  • Understanding health.
  • Mental health.
  • Sexual health.
  • Substance use.

There is a wide range of evidence that CLD can help learners to develop their skills.

For example, CLD can help learners to develop skills such as:

  • Reading.
  • Writing.
  • Counting.
  • Using a computer.

CLD can also help learners to develop other skills.

For example, ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages).

Things that help learners to participate in CLD include:

  • Flexibility.
  • Kind staff.
  • Somewhere safe to learn, near where you live.

Learners may find it difficult to take up learning, which might prevent them from participating in CLD.

For example, inequality and poverty can make it more difficult for learners in CLD.
