This report analyses and presents an overview of data published by the Scottish Prison Service on deaths in prison custody in Scotland.

2. To avoid any delays in how this information was published, changes were made to the way SPS reported the cause of death in 2019. Since 2019, SPS includes the ‘medical certificate cause of death’(MCCD) for all deaths. Prior to this SPS awaited the outcome of the cause of death as detailed in the Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) which can take years to conclude.
