Equally Safe: consultation - easy read

Easy Read version of the consultation seeking views on how best to challenge men’s demand for prostitution in Scotland, reducing the harms associated with prostitution and supporting women involved to exit.

How other countries deal with prostitution

Different countries have different ways of dealing with prostitution. The consultation lays out the four main systems:

Abolitionism
This means that outdoor and indoor prostitution is not against the law. Adults involved in prostitution are not punished. However making money from someone else being a prostitute is against the law.

New Abolitionism

This is similar to Abolitionism. Outdoor and indoor prostitution are not against the law, but brothels are against the law.

Prohibitionism

This means that outdoor and indoor prostitution is against the law. Anyone involved in prostitution can be punished. In some countries the purchase of sex is made a crime but the selling of sex is not. This model is more commonly known as the "Nordic Model".

Regulationism

This means that outdoor and indoor prostitution is controlled by the government. Prostitutes may have to be registered within their local area and may have to have medical checks.

Question 3. Which of these 4 approaches do you think is the best for stopping violence against women and girls?
