Education Maintenance Allowances: 2022-23

Statistics on Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) recipients and payments made in 2022-2023.

Number of EMA recipients decreased between 2021-22 and 2022-23, continuing the downward trend. Numbers decreased from 23,905 in 2021-22 to 22,225 in 2022-23.
Around 12.9% of all Scottish 16-18 year olds received at least one payment in 2022-23. This is a decrease from 14.1% in 2021-22.
Total EMA spend for 2022-23 is down from the previous year’s spend, decreasing from £18.6 million in 2021-22 to £17.3 million in 2022-23.
