Overview of key facts and trends relating to energy in Scotland for Q1 2024


In 2022, 87.9% of electricity generated in Scotland was from low-carbon sources including nuclear, pumped hydro and renewable sources. The last coal-fired power station in Scotland closed in 2016 and oil and gas now provide just 11.4% of Scotland’s electricity generation. Figure 5 shows the transformation in Scotland’s electricity generation since 2004 when low carbon sources provided half of the electricity generated in Scotland.
