In the first quarter of 2024, 10,722 GWh of electricity was generated from renewable sources. This is a 4% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

There is 15.4 GW of renewable electricity operational capacity in Scotland as of the end of March 2024.

As of the end of March 2024, there are 790 renewable energy projects, with an estimated capacity of 46.8 GW in the planning pipeline. The largest contributor to this potential increase in capacity is storage (20.2 GW).

In 2022, there was 35g of CO2e/kWh of greenhouse gas emissions associated with electricity generation in Scotland. This remains below the 2018 ambition of 50g of CO2e/kWh.

In 2022, 87.9% of electricity generated in Scotland was from low-carbon sources. In comparison to 11.4% of Scotland’s electricity generation which came from fossil fuels.

Total fuel consumption for road vehicles in Scotland rose by 6% in 2022 compared to 2021. Road transport energy consumption has now returned to pre-covid levels.
