Energy Statistics for Scotland - Q3 2024

Overview of key facts and trends relating to energy in Scotland for Q3 2024

Renewable Electricity Pipeline

As of the end of September 2024, there are 962 potential renewable energy projects (including battery and pumped hydro storage) within the planning and construction pipeline, with a total estimated capacity of 57.3 GW. Pipeline projects include:

  • 83 projects (with an estimated capacity of 4.6 GW) currently under construction
  • 536 projects (with an estimated capacity of 19.4 GW) with planning approval which are awaiting construction
  • 341 projects (with an estimated capacity of 33.3 GW) which have submitted planning applications

Storage technologies in the form of batteries and pumped hydro storage have the largest estimated pipeline capacity (26.4 GW). This is then followed by onshore wind (14.5 GW) and offshore wind (13.4 GW).

All pipeline capacities are estimated, the final capacity is dependent on successful completion and finding routes to market and successful project completion.
