Social work - Practice Learning Support Grant: equality impact assessment

Equality impact assessment relating to the introduction of the Practice Learning Support Grant for eligible social work students with practice learning placements in-year. It assesses the impact of the proposed grant for groups with protected characteristics.

Who will the Practice Learning Support Grant affect?

The PLSG is available to:

  • undergraduates in their third and fourth year of four-year course
  • postgraduates in their first and second year of two-year course

This equates to upwards of 1,200 practice learning placements each year (SSSC, management information).

To be eligible for the grant, students must:

  • be a home student, resident according to SAAS residency criteria
  • be on a social work qualifying programme approved by the SSSC
  • be studying full-time
  • be undertaking a period of assessed practice learning in-year, with verification of their attendance on placement provided to the SSSC by the university and/or placement provider
  • not be sponsored by an employer for their studies

Exclusions include:

  • international students: to align with SAAS criteria for student support
  • students sponsored by an employer: employers can reasonably be expected to cover travel costs as completing placements is mandatory for qualification
  • placements which are part of study abroad
