Conclusion

This report presents evidence across a range of areas, where evidence offers useful insight into the experiences of non-binary people in Scotland. Primarily, the evidence found suggests that non-binary people face discrimination in multiple sectors of society. Areas where non-binary people have positive experiences may not have been reflected in this report, due to the policy focus of improving the lives of non-binary people in Scotland.

This Evidence Review identified areas that would benefit from further examination and data analysis:

  • Information about the way in which non-binary people’s intersectional characteristics can impact upon their experiences.
  • Experiences of poverty and socio-economic inequality.
  • Qualitative research of experiences in particular areas of society such as health and community.
  • Experiences of services in which a gender binary is assumed e.g. reproductive health, gender-based violence, housing provision and homelessness, and education etc.
  • Experience of issues related to Human Rights legislation.

Work will take place early 2025 to publish outputs from Scotland Census 2022 on available data for non-binary people in Scotland. This aims to capture some of the limited evidence on demographics and intersectional equality characteristics and at this stage, the need for further research will be re-assessed.
