Non-binary people's experiences in Scotland: evidence review

Presents evidence which offers useful insight into the experiences of non-binary people in Scotland. Primarily, the evidence suggests that non-binary people face discrimination in multiple sectors of society such as education, communities, work, benefits and housing.

Approach

This Evidence Review included a search for a range of data and sources relevant to non-binary people’s experiences in Scotland. Inclusion criteria was extended to include trans people, including sources which collated trans and non-binary people in a singular category. This was agreed in consultation with stakeholder organisations because of the similarity of experiences within both groups.

Sources from the UK and other devolved nations were also seen to be applicable to Scotland in some cases. It was therefore agreed that inclusion criteria for this report would be as follows:

  • Data and evidence of non-binary people’s experiences, and resources where non-binary people are found within a wider survey about LGBTQI+ people.
  • Data and evidence that reports on trans people’s experiences.
  • Data found within the UK and devolved nations, not just Scotland.

We also engaged with LGBTQI+ stakeholders, such as LEAP Sports, LGBT Health and Wellbeing, Stonewall Scotland, Equality Network, Scottish Trans and LGBT Youth Scotland, who provided other sources of data and evidence for this review.

The evidence search found 57 sources of evidence from 2012-2024 which met the above criteria.
