'Exceptional market conditions' in agriculture: EIR release

Information request and response under the Environmental Information (Scotland) Regulations 2004.

Information requested

Information on what discussions, if any, there have been with the United Kingdom government about declaring there to be 'exceptional market conditions' due to the events of this year (the war in Ukraine, inflation, soaring costs etc), which would allow the Secretary of State to give aid to farmers in Scotland (and the rest of the UK).

Response

The answer to your question is the declaration of “exceptional market conditions” relates to provisions in the Agriculture Act 2020, which do not extend to Scotland and therefore do not provide a power for the Secretary of State to provide funding for Scottish farmers.
