Fatal Accident Inquiries: statistics 2023 to 2024

Statistics of Fatal Accident Inquiries (FAIs) covering the period 2023 to 2024.


The Scottish Ministers are required under section 29 of the Inquiries into Fatal Accidents and Sudden Deaths etc. (Scotland) Act 2016 (“the 2016 Act”) to report on inquiries that concluded in the previous financial year.

The statistics for Fatal Accident Inquiries under Section 29 (1) of 2016 Act for the period 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024 are as follows:

  • number of FAIs that ended during the year: 32
  • number in which recommendations requiring a response were made: 26 
  • number of such recommendations made: 31
  • number of such recommendations in relation to which a response was received by SCTS under section 28 (1):  37
  • number of such recommendations in relation to which a notice was published under section 28 (7): 6

Please note that this information has been confirmed in advance with Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service and both organisations agree the numbers as stated.
