Appendix D Analysis of Non-UK Vessels’ Activity within Offshore MPA Management Areas

VMS data for 2015-2020 were extracted where the reported speed was between 0 and 5 knots. The positions were filtered to include only those within a proposed management area.

Option 2

  • Values are averages for the period 2015-2020
  • Vessels must have a minimum of 12 hours in an MPA management area between 2015 and 2020. (Rule for persistence)
  • Assumes all non-UK activity will be removed. (Gear type not available for all non-UK activity)

Option 1

  • Values are averages for the period 2015-2020
  • Vessels must have a minimum of 12 hours in an MPA management area between 2015 and 2020.
  • Assumes non-UK activity will be removed using the best estimate of vessel type / gear and the proposed management measures (e.g. prohibition of demersal mobile or demersal static):
    • For EU vessels, the gear code was derived from the primary gear type in the EU Fleet Register (europa.eu). Activity assumed to be removed based on the gear code.
    • For Norwegian vessels, the target species type (demersal/pelagic) was estimated from the Fiskeridirektoratet Vessel Register (fiskeridir.no). All demersal activity was assumed to be removed from management areas.
    • For Faroes vessels, the vessel type was estimated using historic surveillance data and landings into the UK.
    • Turbot Bank only includes data for Denmark, as the only country targeting sandeels in Scottish waters.

The results are presented below, by site, for each management option, for average number of vessels, and average number of hours fishing (derived from VMS).

Entries marked with an asterisk (*) cannot be disclosed due to small numbers (less than 5 vessels).
