There are no new variations this week.

The mackerel fortnightly catch period for AU vessels has been updated.

Remote Electronic Monitoring

Remote Electronic Monitoring (REM) is now mandatory for any vessel dredging for scallops in Scottish waters, and for Scottish scallop dredge vessels wherever they are fishing.  Guidance is available at https://www.gov.scot/policies/sea-fisheries/remote-electronic-monitoring/

The legislation - The Sea Fisheries (Remote Electronic Monitoring and Regulation of Scallop Fishing) (Scotland) Regulations 2024 – also requires REM on relevant pelagic vessels from 7 March 2026.  In order to prepare for the new rules coming into force, remote inspections and system test trips can be carried out from 7 September 2025.  Guidance on the pelagic vessel requirements will be published in due course.

Marine Directorate Fishers Survey:

Research on Fishers’ Behaviour and Attitudes towards Compliance and Enforcement – Survey for fishers.

Please take 20 minutes to complete a survey exploring fishers’ perspectives on the Marine Directorate regulations. We are interested in fishers’ reasons for complying or not complying with regulations, whether Fixed Penalty Notices are fair, and what could encourage fishers to be more compliant. The survey is anonymous and is analysed by a social research organisation separate to the Marine Directorate to ensure an open conversation. The survey is closing on 31 August and next fortnight is last chance for fishers to have their voices heard, we would very much encourage you to complete the survey before it closes.
