FOI reference: FOI/17/02012
Date received: 23 August 2017
Date responded: 10 October 2017
Information requested
National and estate-specific financial data relating to payments made to estates in Scotland over the last 5 years. You clarified your request in your email of 4 September 2017 setting out that in 'that I wish to identify the amount of public subsidies paid to estates engaged in deer management and grouse moor management.'
Response
Further to that we spoke on 12 September 2017, at which point I explained that we do not hold data that classifies estates into the categories you requested. However by making an association with businesses who are involved certain management commitments under agri-environment schemes, we could provide some information, noting that the businesses involved in the commitments and receiving the payments, may not necessarily be involved in any associated sporting activity. The financial information relates to that paid out in calendar year 2016, this information in itself is dynamic as further payments are made.
I enclose a copy of some of the information you requested, in the form of a list of beneficiaries where our system shows that they have undertaken an agri-environment commitment relating to deer management, and including the total sum of all payments received by that business in calendar year 2016. Note that payments made within a calendar year may relate to one or more Scheme years and one or more financial year.
You can find information relating to the overall levels of subsidy paid to these businesses in Scheme year 2015 and 2016 at http://cap-payments.defra.gov.uk/Search.aspx. Under section 25(1) of FOISA, we do not have to give you information which is already reasonably accessible to you. If, however, you do not have internet access to obtain this information from the website(s) listed, then please contact me again and I will send you a paper copy.
