Lead teacher employment information: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002

Information requested

The most up-to-date information on how many Lead Teachers have been employed in Scotland since 2019 as well as which Local Authorities have Lead Teachers as employees and whether these positions are at Divisional Level or School Level (primary/secondary).

Response

I include details of most of the information you requested.

From the information provided by all Scottish local authorities there were five Full Time Equivalent Lead Teachers that met the required inclusion criteria for the 2022 School Staff Census, these were all from the Scottish Borders. The role of Lead teacher was established in June 2021, therefore figures are not available for earlier years. We do not collect comprehensive data on all Lead teachers in Scotland, the Teachers Census reports on posts with a teaching remit, some Lead Teachers may be employed in posts without a teaching remit and therefore will not be included in the counts reported as part of the annual census, we therefore do not hold the information to answer the second part of your enquiry.
