Response
While our aim is to provide information whenever possible, in this instance the Scottish Government does not have some of the information you have requested.
Information isn’t held specifically on the number of tenants in Scotland who are on a joint tenancy. However, I have attached two tables based on results from the Scottish Household Survey from 2019. These present information on the characteristics of households living in each tenure in terms of the numbers of adults in the household, showing both the proportion of households and an estimate of numbers of adults. Whilst this won’t directly reflect the prevalence of joint tenancies it may help in providing information on the proportions of households, and corresponding numbers of adults, in the rented sectors in which there are more than 1 adult residing in the household.
Some of the information you have requested is available from the Scottish Government website. Under section 25(1) of FOISA, we do not have to give you information which is already reasonably accessible
to you. If, however, you do not have internet access to obtain this information from the website(s) listed, then please contact me again and I will send you a paper copy.
The Scottish Government publishes the number of Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO) licences in force, from 2001 to 2021 as part of its Housing statistics: Houses in multiple occupation - gov.scot
(www.gov.scot) release. These figures are based on information collected from local authorities through the housing statistics annual returns, although no information is collected on the number of people
residing in the properties. In the latest year for which data is available, the year to end March 2021, there were an estimated 14,862 HMO Licences in force across Scotland.
