Policy for purchasing donor sperm: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002

Information requested

Can you share the current Scottish Government Policy regarding use of donor sperm purchased from a sperm bank for NHS fertility treatment; as well as the previous policy, and dates of the most recent policy change.

Please can you also share information on the reasons given for this policy change.

Response

There has been no policy change. The Scottish Government has always been clear that couples who are eligible for NHS fertility treatment should not have to pay for any aspect of their treatment, this includes the purchase of donor sperm. The Scottish Government expects NHS Boards to meet the needs of couples who are eligible for NHS fertility treatment and require donor sperm for their treatment.
