Advertising for egg and sperm donors by Healthier Scotland: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002

Information requested

I am writing to you to express my dismay in finding out tonight that the Scottish Government is paying for adverts for egg and sperm donation: targeting these adverts at young women on Facebook under the label of Healthier Scotland; and to ask you how much public money has been spent by Healthier Scotland (or the Scottish Government) on these adverts. We understand egg donation is also being advertised on the radio.

And

Further to my email of Friday 3 November, I would also like to know whether women undergoing egg harvesting as part of this campaign will be entitled to, or offered, the standard £750 "compensation" egg donors in the UK receive after egg donation?

Response

The Scottish Government National Donor Gamete campaign delivered in partnership with NHS Scotland ran from 30 October 2023 until 24 November 2023 and cost £50,519.60 inclusive of VAT.

The campaign invites altruistic donations to help those people in Scotland who need help becoming parents. NHS Scotland does not make payments or provide compensation to gamete donors.
