Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002

Information requested

The funding Confucius Institutes received from the Scottish Government in 2022/23 and 2023/24.

Response

In your request you asked:
- How much money has the Scottish Government given to the Confucius Institute for Scotland's schools in 2022/23 and 2023/24?

The Scottish Government funds the University of Strathclyde to support a range of activity to improve modern language learning in schools, which includes Mandarin learning.

The University of Strathclyde’s staff delivering support to Mandarin learning is based within two of the university's centres: the Scotland National Centre for Languages (SCILT) and the Confucius Institute for Scotland’s Schools (CISS).

In 2022-23, the Scottish Government issued Strathclyde University with a grant of £520,000 in support of the activities managed by the CISS staff.

In 2023-24, to reflect an evolution in the way that support is provided, the Scottish Government issued the University of Strathclyde with one grant of £900,000 covering support for all languages learning in schools.

For further information, including any detailed information on the specific funding assigned to Chinese language learning by SCILT in 2023/24, please contact the University of Strathclyde at:
