Number of radiologists in training and training places for 2024: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002


Information requested

A) The total number of clinical radiology places by deanery for each of the August intakes for the years 2018 to 2024.

B) The total number of clinical radiology trainees and the number of full time equivalent (FTE) clinical radiology trainees for the intake years August 2018 through to August 2023, if possible by deanery.

C) The total number of trainees expected to complete training before August 2024 and before August 2025, if possible by deanery.

D) The total number of number of trainees expected to be in training in August 2024, based on the advertised intake of 19 to start training in August 2024, if possible by deanery, and reasons for the decrease in training numbers in an already understaffed specialty.

E) Of the 153 extra posts announced for the August 2024 intake, how many of these are for clinical radiology.

F) How many places for Clinical Radiology were recommended by the Scottish Shape of Training Transition Group for August 2024 intake.

Response

While our aim is to provide information whenever possible, in this instance the costs of locating, retrieving and providing the information requested for questions A-D would exceed the upper cost limit of £600. The reasons why it exceeds the cost limit are explained in the Annex to this letter.[1] However,

I enclose a copy of some of the information you requested.

Question E: None of the 153 expansion posts being added this year will be in Clinical Radiology.

Question F: The Scottish Shape of Training Transition Group did not recommend any uplifts in Clinical Radiology for the 2024 training intake.

ANNEX

[1] While our aim is to provide information whenever possible, in this instance the costs of locating, retrieving and providing the information requested for questions A-D would exceed the upper cost limit of £600. Complying would take staff a total of 66 hours to undertake the appropriate searches for 3,373 items which exceeds the upper cost limit. Under section 12 of FOISA public authorities are not required to comply with a request for information if the authority estimates that the cost of complying would exceed the upper cost limit, which is currently set at £600 by Regulations made under section 12.
