Puberty Blockers deferred for new patients: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.

Information requested

I see Greater Glasgow and Clyde have put a statement out about pausing puberty blockers and it says

“On Clinical advice both NHS GG&C and NHS Lothian deferred starting new patients on these treatments in mid-March 2024 in response to the position taken by NHS England and while the publication of Cass Review was awaited.”

So I’d like to ask for the following:

1. A copy of the correspondence the health board sent to the Scottish Government to inform them the decision referred to above was made.

2. Confirmation of the date and time the board informed the Scottish Government.

3. A copy of the reply (whatever form that came in) from the Scottish Government sent to the board to acknowledge the decision above.

Response

In response to your first question, I attach a letter sent by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (GGC) and NHS Lothian to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) on 27 March 2024, received by the Chief Medical Officer’s office on 28 March 2024.

In response to your second question, this letter was received by the Chief Medical Officer’s office at 12:48 PM, Thursday 28 March 2024.

In response to your third request, I attach a copy of a letter issued by the CMO on 9 April 2024 to the Medical Directors of NHS GGC and NHS Lothian, in response to their letter dated 27 March 2024.
