Firefighters pension scheme data: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.


Information requested

1. How many Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) employees have pensions in the New Firefighters Pension Scheme (NFPS) [2006]?

2. How many SFRS employees in total have transferred pensions from a previous pension employment scheme into the NFPS [2006] since this scheme was initially established?

3. How many SFRS employees have transferred pensions from a previous pension employment scheme into the NFPS [2006] since the establishment of the 2015 CARE scheme on 01/04/2015?

4. What is the total capital amount which has been accrued in the NFPS [2006]?

5. What is the total capital amount which has been transferred into the NFPS [2006] by all SFRS employees?

6. What is the breakdown of the ages of SFRS employees in NFPS [2006]? Bar or Pie chart would suffice.

7. How many SFRS employees in the NFPS [2006] are over 50 years old? Please provide details of the number of SFRS employees for each age category between 50-59 years.

8. How many SFRS employees have already retired from the NFPS [2006]? Please provide details of the number of retirees for each age category between 50-60 years.

9. What are the actuarial reductions in the NFPS [2006] for SFRS employees wishing to retire before the normal pensionable age of 60 years? Please provide actuarial reductions for retirement for each year between 50-59 years.

10. What are the actuarial reductions in the CARE Scheme [2015] for SFRS employees wishing to retire before the normal pensionable age of 55 years? Please provide actuarial reductions for retirement for each year between 50-54 years.

Response

1. There are 3605 members that hold service in the New Firefighters Pension Scheme (NFPS [2006]). Of the 3605, there are 422 currently in payment.

2. 328 members transferred pensions from a different scheme into the NFPS [2006].

3. 83 members have transferred pensions into the NFPS [2006] since the 2015 CARE scheme was established.

4. While our aim is to provide information whenever possible, in this instance the Scottish Government does not have the information you have requested for this question. The role of SPPA is limited to the administering of the scheme. We do not function as the accountable officers. Consequently, we are unable to provide the information you have requested. However, you may wish to contact Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) at www.firescotland.gov.uk who may be able to help you.

7. There are currently, as of 5th June 2024, 1529 members over 50 years old who have service in the NFPS [2006]. 413 of these are currently in payment and below is a breakdown of ages ranging from 50-59:
