Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Paramedic numbers in GP practices: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.

Information requested

"How many ANP, ACCP, Paramedics Work in GP practices in Scotland?"

Response

The answer to your question is:

As of March 2024, there are 224.5 Whole Time Equivalent (WTE) Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPs) and 13.0 WTE Advanced Paramedics employed by Health Boards in Scotland, working in GP practices and the community, under locally developed Primary Care Improvement Plans (PCIPs) aligned to the 2018 GP contract and associated MoUs. These figures are based on data provided by Integration Authorities (IAs), published in June 2024. Data are the best available estimates from local systems and may be subject to revision.

Additionally, ANPs are employed directly by GP practices. As of March 2023, there are an estimated 553.7 WTE Advanced Nurse Practitioners directly employed by General Practice, based on data published in December 2023.

While our aim is to provide information whenever possible, in this instance the Scottish Government does not have some of the information you have requested. The reason why we don't have the information on Advanced Critical Care Practitioner (ACCP) is that the Scottish Government does not hold or have access to any data relating to this role.
