Response
In your request, you asked for information about members of staff. Our response therefore covers Scottish Government staff employed in the core directorates (see Annex A for details).
How many staff in the Scottish Government were dismissed in the last 5 years?
You have asked for how many staff in the Scottish Government were dismissed in the past five years. As the information requested is extracted from our payroll system, the data supplied in this response is for the period 1st September 2019 to 31 August 2024. During that period, 43 employees were dismissed from employment.
The dismissals were for reasons including misconduct, attendance, performance and/or failure to meet the standards required during probation.
How many staff in the Scottish Government received a partial effective or exceptional marking in the last 2 years?
You also asked about the number of staff who have received a partially effective and exceptional marking in the last 2 years. Below, is a table which breaks down the total number of individuals who received each of the 5 performance markings available under Scottish Government’s appraisal arrangements for staff in Bands A to C in the past 2 appraisal years.

What is the performance marking matrix for SCS staff in Scottish Government? How many are in the bottom lowest section? How many are on informal or formal performance monitoring?
In April 2024, the Scottish Government adopted a new performance management process for staff at Senior Civil Service level (see Annex B). As this is a new system, we do not currently hold the data you have requested. In addition the performance management year in Scottish Government runs from 1 April to 31 March each year, therefore we do not currently have performance markings for any Senior Civil Servant for the 2024/25 report year.
