Response

  • The number of EV chargers by charge place Scotland?

As of 13 October 2024 there are 2,923 publicly available charge points registered on the ChargePlace Scotland network.

While our aim is to provide information whenever possible, some of the information you have requested in the point below is not available -

  • The number of EV chargers by charge place Scotland that have broken in each of the past five financial years.

The Scottish Government does not have historical information on faulty charge points due to historical fault information not being migrated from the previous CPS contractor, a limited amount of information relating to ‘faults’ and ‘downtime’ is available on the CPS website Monthly Charge Point Performance – Charge Place Scotland. Please select ‘ Ticket Breakdown’ at the link above to download monthly lists of ‘tickets’ logged with the CPS contact centre via email and telephone calls by users of the network to flag issues or requests for assistance. Column ‘H’ indicates the reason, including types of ‘fault’. Please note we cannot provide you with a figure for “broken EV chargers” as a ‘fault’ does not necessarily mean that the charge point itself is broken, for example, a user may have pressed the emergency stop button or it may relate to an electricity supply issue beyond the control of the network operator. Many issues recorded as ‘faults’ may be very transient in nature and resolved swiftly by the network operator.

Under section 25(1) of FOISA, we do not have to give you information which is already reasonably accessible to you. If, however, you do not have internet access to obtain this information from the website(s) listed, then please contact me again and I will send you a paper copy.

This is a formal notice under section 17(1) of FOISA that the Scottish Government does not have the information you have requested for the following -

  • The number of EV chargers scheduled to be installed over the current financial year?
  • The number of EV chargers scheduled to be installed over the 2025-26 financial year?

ChargePlace Scotland have limited knowledge or notice of future commissions by charge point owners whose charge points are hosted on the ChargePlace Scotland network, however to date owners have reported approx. 160 charge points due to be commissioned before end of this financial year. Due to the decision to transition away from ChargePlace Scotland in the near future, no new charge points will be commissioned onto the network from 01 April 2025.

In January 2022 the Scottish Government launched its Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Fund (EVIF) this fund supports the Scottish Government’s Vision for Scotland’s Public EV Charging Network, providing £30 million to enable Scotland’s Local Authorities to work in partnership with the private sector to leverage additional private investment to continue expand public EV charging infrastructure in Scotland, with public funding specifically targeted towards those areas of Scotland less likely to attract private in public EV charging infrastructure.

The Scottish Government does not have the following information you have asked for because this is not routinely collated by the Scottish Government, Transport Scotland or ChargePlace Scotland.

  • The average cost to charge a car per kilowatt?
  • The average cost to charge a car per mile?

This can vary depending on many factors such as driving style, car performance and road conditions. Information found on the ChargePlace Scotland website Monthly Charge Point Performance – Charge Place Scotland can be used to work out some general insight if you wish to do so. There is also a variety of estimates, data and information available in the public domain that can be utilised.
