Speed cameras installed on Scotland’s trunk roads: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.

Information requested

The number of speed cameras installed on Scotland’s trunk roads, broken down into a table to cover every financial year from 2014-15 to date.

Response

I enclose a copy of most of the information you requested in the format you asked for.

Across Scotland, safety cameras are deployed through the Scottish Safety Camera Programme primarily where they have the greatest potential to reduce injury collisions and where there is evidence of both collisions and speeding. This is in accordance with criteria contained in the Scottish Safety Camera Programme Handbook. This can be viewed at: https://www.transport.gov.scot/publication/scottish-safety-camera-programme-handbook/. As a national programme, sites are identified on the basis of meeting site selection criteria, there is no differentiation between trunk or local roads, the Programme covers both equally. I am unable to report specifically on numbers of enforcement locations on trunk roads alone as these are reported annually within our annual reports.

While our aim is to provide information whenever possible, in this instance the Scottish Government does not have some of the information you have requested. We do not hold data for the financial year 2014-15. A review of the Safety Camera Programme was undertaken in 2013-14 and reported in May 2015, a summary of that report can be viewed at: safety-camera-review-summary-report-may-2015.pdf (transport.gov.scot).

An annual site prioritisation process is undertaken each year to determine new safety camera sites across our road network. This national exercise acts to ensure the right camera technology is in the right place at the right time. It involves a range of partners including the three regional safety camera units, all thirty-three road authorities and Police Scotland, and acts to identify potential new camera sites which meet the minimum criteria, while at the same time assessing the performance of existing enforcement strategies.
