School inspection statistics: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.


Information requested

1. The names of all schools (primary and secondary) that have been inspected in Scotland since August 2023.

2. The total number of inspectors who are currently a part of the inspection team in Scotland (excluding associate inspectors).

3. The total number of inspectors in the existing team who have previously been headteachers (on a permanent basis).

4. The total number of inspectors in the existing team who have previously been depute headteachers (on a permanent basis).

5. The total number of inspectors in the existing team who have never held the position of headteacher or depute headteacher (on a permanent basis).

Response

We can provide some of the information you requested. While our aim is to provide information wherever possible, in this instance Education Scotland does not have some of the information you have requested.

1. The names of all schools (primary and secondary) that have been inspected in Scotland since August 2023.

A list of primary, secondary and all through schools inspected from August 2023 to 11 October 2024 is attached at Annex A.

Notes

(i) The list contains all local authority schools, independent schools and grant-aided schools inspected since August 2023.
(ii) The list contains primary, secondary and all-through schools.
(iii) The list includes schools that have been inspected, but for which the inspection report is not yet published.
(iv) The list includes schools that have been subject to a further inspection.
(v) The list does not include inspections of special schools.

2. The total number of inspectors who are currently part of the inspection team in Scotland (excluding associate inspectors).

As at 30 September 2024, there were 64 HM Inspectors in the Inspectorate function of Education Scotland.

Notes

(i) This includes HM Inspectors who are permanently employed by Education Scotland and currently work either on a full or part-time basis within the Inspectorate function.
(ii) This includes employees within the Inspectorate function who have been appointed as HM Inspectors following approval by His Majesty at a sitting of his Privy Council and are deployed on inspection teams.
(iii) This excludes HM Inspectors who are part of the leadership team of the Inspectorate function and are not routinely deployed on inspection.

3. The total number of inspectors in the existing team who have previously been headteachers (on a permanent basis), and

4. The total number of inspectors in the existing team who have previously been depute headteachers (on a permanent basis), and

5. The total number of inspectors in the existing team who have never held the position of headteacher or depute headteacher (on a permanent basis).

This is a formal notice under section 17(1) of FOISA that Education Scotland does not have the information you have requested in questions 3, 4 and 5.

To be appointed as an HM Inspector all candidates must be suitably qualified and demonstrate significant and relevant experience in a senior leadership role within education.

Whilst details of previous experience is an important factor in the initial stages of recruitment for the role of HM Inspector, this information is not retained beyond the conclusion of the recruitment process.
