Correspondence from Comhairlie nan Eilean Siar regarding maintenance of causeways: FOI release

Information requested

  • All correspondence that Transport Scotland has received from Comhairlie nan Eilean Siar, from 1 April 2024 to date, regarding the maintenance of the causeways linking Vatersay, Benbecula, South Uist, North Uist, and Berneray.
  • All funding that Transport Scotland has provided to Comhairlie nan Eilean Siar from 1 April 2024 to date to maintain the causeways linking the abovementioned islands.

Response

Between 1 April 2024 and 2 December 2024, Transport Scotland received no correspondence from Comhairlie nan Eilean Siar regarding the maintenance of the causeways linking Vatersay, Benbecula, South Uist, North Uist, and Berneray.

In that same period, Transport Scotland did not provide Comhairlie nan Eilean Siar with any funding to maintain the causeways linking the abovementioned islands.

Local authorities have a duty under the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984 to manage and maintain local roads in their area and duties under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 to secure the expeditious, convenient and safe movement of traffic.
