Freedom of information policy objectives: 2024 to 2026

Information on the actions and priorities of three workstreams, to improve the operation of FOI rights in Scotland.

Background

The Scottish Government recognise statutory FOI rights as the cornerstone of our wider commitment to transparency and openness across government and public services in Scotland. These rights are enshrined in the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 (FOISA) and Environmental Information (Scotland) Regulations 2004 (EI(S)Rs).

Following our consultation on Access to Information Rights in Scotland in 2022 to 2023, we have committed to take forward the following workstreams to strengthen and improve the operation of FOI rights in Scotland:

  • workstream 1 - consideration and Use of Scottish Ministers’ powers to extend coverage of FOISA
  • workstream 2 - updating statutory guidance for Scottish public authorities
  • workstream 3 - maintaining full FOI coverage of public sector in Scotland
