Genomics in Scotland strategy: island communities impact assessment

Island communities impact assessment (ICIA) for the Genomics in Scotland: Building our Future - a five-year national strategy (2024-2029).

Conclusion

Several initiatives are already in place, and will be further developed, to address the issues that come with living in island communities. We recognise that there is potential for different islands to need bespoke approaches and we are committed to working with relevant Health Boards to decide how best to engage with island, remote and rural communities to address their specific concerns and needs.

There is a recognition that additional support and investment is required to ensure island communities receive equity of access and service delivery not only to genomic testing but to genomic information, interpretation, follow-up support and access to genomically-enabled research and clinical trials. In terms of performance measures below, the need for additional support and investment will be considered when and where appropriate.
