Grenfell Tower Inquiry report: Letter to Local Government, Housing and Planning Committee

Letter from Housing Minister Paul McLennan to the Scottish Parliament's Local Government, Housing and Planning Committee.

To: Ariane Burgess MSP, Convener, Local Government, Housing and Planning Committee

From: Housing Minister Paul McLennan

Dear Ariane

GRENFELL TOWER INQUIRY: PHASE 2 REPORT

I am writing to acknowledge today the publication of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Phase 2 Report and the seriousness of the issues dealt with by the Inquiry.  The report is clearly detailed and carefully considered, being the culmination of years of work by the chair, Sir Martin Moore-Bick, and the Inquiry team.

Many of the areas dealt with in the report are devolved matters and the Scottish Government has committed to fully considering the recommendations made and the implications of them for Scotland. The Scottish Government has already taken action to make buildings safer in Scotland, through changes to building standards relevant to high rise buildings, fire safety guidance and new heat and smoke alarm requirements, and through the recently passed Housing (Cladding Remediation) Scotland Act 2024 and our ongoing Cladding Remediation Programme. Where appropriate, we will consider any further action required to address building safety.

Most importantly, on the day of publication of the report, we remember and extend our deepest sympathies to those who lost loved ones in the fire, as well as to the Grenfell community affected by its tragic impact.

Paul McLennan
