- Cyber - Relating to or involving computers
- Cyber security - The practice of defending computers from attack
- Data - Information that has been translated into a form that is efficient for movement or processing
- Encryption - A way of scrambling data so that only authorised parties can understand the information. Encryption requires the use of a cryptographic key – a set of mathematical values that both the sender and the recipient of the encrypted message agree
- FOI - Freedom of information
- ICO - Information Commissioner's Office. The Commissioner is the regulator for data protection in the UK, and freedom of information in England and Wales
- Information - Information is the output that results from analysing, contextualising, structuring, interpreting or in other ways processing data. Information puts meaning and value into data. It facilitates understanding, communication, and learning, and is a key factor in problem-solving, planning and decision-making
- MDM - Mobile device management
- NCCC - non-corporate communication channel
- Nolan Principles - The seven principles of public life established by the Nolan Committee in their first report in 1995. The principles are selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty, and leadership
- NRS - National Records of Scotland. NRS is a non-ministerial department of the Scottish government. Their purpose is to collect, preserve and produce information about Scotland's people and history, and make it available to inform current and future generations
- OSIC - Office of the Scottish Information Commissioner. The Commissioner is the regulator for freedom of information in Scotland
- Records - A record is anything in which information is recorded in any form and covers digital and electronic records, records in microform and other types of specialised media, as well as paper and parchment records
- Records management - Records management is the systematic control of an organisation's records, throughout their life cycle, to meet operational business needs, statutory and fiscal requirements, and community expectations
- Risk register - A method of recording risks in an organisation to support management of the risks, and onward reporting and discussion
- UK GDPR - The United Kingdom General Data Protection Regulation. This is a reference to the UK Data Protection Act 2018, read together with the EU GDPR
