This report presents the initial results of the Scottish Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest data linkage project (OHCA data linkage project).

Improving Outcomes from OHCA

The Starting Point

Average number of OHCA 3,000 per year - 38% of OHCA patients were female; 62% were male

OHCA can affect people of all ages at any time - 10% of OHCA patients were under 45 years of age; 27% were aged between 45 and 64; 23% were aged between 65 and 74; and 40% were aged 75 and over

Only around 1 in 20 survive to leave hospital

People who live in rural areas are 32% less likely to survive to leave hospital

People in the most deprived areas are twice as likely to have an OHCA

People in the most deprived areas are twice as likely to have an OHCA

The average age of the people who have an OHCA in these deprived areas is 7 years lower (compared with those in less deprived areas)

People from most deprived areas are 43% less likely to survive to leave hospital compared to those from least deprived areas
