Marine European Protected Species and basking sharks: licensing

Licensing requirements for marine European Protected Species and basking sharks.

How to apply for a EPS or basking shark licence

Before applying for an EPS or basking shark licence, it is essential that other relevant licences or consents have been secured for the proposed activity e.g. a marine licence. It is the responsibility of the applicant to obtain any other consents or authorisations that may be required.

Completed application forms should be sent to MD-LOT.

There are no application fees for an EPS or basking shark licence.

Application forms for EPS and basking shark licences can be found in the supporting documents.

To ensure a successful application, the applicant must:

  • answer all questions fully in order to avoid delays
  • provide all appropriate information to support the application
  • read the declaration and warning sections before signing
  • ensure the application form is signed

MD-LOT will aim to determine whether a licence should be issued within six to eight weeks of acceptance of a completed application. However, please note that for large scale or complex projects, the determination period may be longer.
