Media reporting on child homicide victims: consultation - easy read

An easy read version of the consultation on media reporting on child homicide victims.

Not changing the law

We could keep things the same. This would mean there would not be a new law. This would mean that there would be no anonymity for child homicide victims.

There are other things we can do to make sure reporting does not upset families. There is already some guidance to help the media with this. You can look at some here:

Mind My Experience - VSS Language Guide (victimsupport.scot)

Advice for journalists | Zero Tolerance

Editors' Code of Practice (ipso.co.uk)

We could provide more guidance for the media. This would have information on how to make reporting about child homicide victims less upsetting for families.

We would work with victim support, media organisations and criminal justice agencies to write this guidance.

We have been told by grieving families that more guidance is a good idea. But they are worried that some of the media would not use it.
