Mental Health Inpatient Census 2022 Parts 1 and 2

Results of the sixth Mental Health & Learning Disability Inpatient Census and Outwith NHS Scotland Placements Census, 2022.

Figure 1: The number of beds was 3,451 and number of patients was 2,959, with an occupancy rate of 86% in 2022. This is a small increase from 2019 where the occupancy rate of 84%, although the number of patients and beds were higher being  3,310 and 3,922, respectively. Use these figures with caution – there were methodological issues prior to 2022.

 

  • patients were most likely to be in an acute ward (35% of all patients).
  • 254 (9%) adult inpatients had a diagnosis for either a learning disability or autism.
  • 53% of adult inpatients also had a long-term physical health condition.
  • there were 46 patients aged under 18 (2% of all patients) occupying the 54 available Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) beds at the 2022 Census.       
  • there were 450 patients (15% of all patients) primarily managed by forensic services in the 2022 Census.
  • there were 162 patients funded by, but treated outwith, NHS Scotland at the 2022 Census. Of these patients, 148 (91%) were treated in a private facility.
