Mental Health Inpatient Census 2023 - Parts 1 and 2
Results of the seventh Mental Health and Learning Disability Inpatient Census and Outwith NHS Scotland Placements Census, 2023.

Figure 1: For the first time since the census began, in 2023 the number of inpatients increased compared to the previous year. Inpatient beds were slightly down, while the occupancy rate increased to 89%.

Figures prior to 2022 are missing some hospital wards and are approximate.
- Patients were most likely to be in an acute ward (39% of all patients).
- 9% of adult inpatients had a diagnosis of a learning disability or autism.
- 56% of adult inpatients also had a long-term physical health condition.
- There were 46 patients under 18 years old in the 54 available CAMHS beds.
- Forensic services primarily managed 447 patients at the 2023 Census.
- 124 patients were treated outwith NHS Scotland but funded by them. 91% (113 patients) of these were treated in a private facility.
