Mental Health Nursing Review: monthly updates
Brief updates on the work of the Scottish Mental Health Nursing Review for mental health nurses and other stakeholders who are interested in the work of the Review.
Part of
December 2024/January 2025 update
Recent activities:
- the project team has engaged and sought further views within the Discovery phase of the Review. This has included engagement with Mental Health/Learning Disabilities Consultant Nurse Forum for Scotland, Scottish Recovery Network, the UK MH Academic Community, NHS Education for Scotland, Scottish Executive Nursing Directors, and Scotland’s Royal College of Nursing
- engagement events were held in December for Newly Qualified Mental Health Nurses
- the See Me Anti-Stigma and Discrimination Research Project, funded by the Scottish Government, is making good progress. This initiative examines how stigma affects the experiences of mental health nurses, particularly in terms of recruitment and retention, and explores potential solutions to these issues. Mental Health Nurses were invited to participate in a survey which has now concluded. The survey results will be produced into a report, and the findings will be reviewed and integrated into the final Review report
- recent engagement with the Scottish Recovery Network and the Nurse Academic community continues exploration in relation to embedding meaningful lived experience input in the design and delivery of mental health nursing education and development
- review of Literature has been concluded and a draft report has been produced
- discussions with authors of positive and innovative practice submissions to explore further the role of the Mental Health Nurses involved in these
- regular amalgamated meetings by the Leadership Advisory Group (LAG) and the Practitioner Reference Group (PRG) continue
Next steps include:
- drafting of the final report and planning for publication and launch of the Review report
- internal Scottish Government commission, seeking views and alignment with other policy areas, including Nursing and Midwifery Taskforce (NMT) Implementation colleagues
- meeting confirmed with Voices of Experience (VoX), research colleagues and NHS Education Scotland, with plans in place to engage with Carer’s Trust, Remote and Rural colleagues, Scottish Care and Union colleagues, as we progress to final stages of the Review
